Vika Prokopaviciute
Vika Prokopaviciute's artistic practice is characterized by questions of structure, construction, and visual cognition, treating painting not as a static object but as an open-ended process of inquiry. In this sense, painting becomes a site where perception itself is interrogated, foregrounding the instability of visual knowledge with works that oscillate between optical illusion and physical materiality.
Rather than treating painting as a stable representational surface, Prokopaviciute understands it as an epistemological field-a site in which visual knowledge is produced through processes of uncertainty, repetition, and transformation. In this regard, through layered geometries, folded structures, woven patterns, and subtle chromatic modulations Prokopaviciute destabilizes conventional distinctions between two-dimensional pictorial space and sculptural form.
Furthermore, rather than treating each painting as an isolated work, Prokopaviciute develops her paintings as interconnected moments within an evolving system. Each canvas emerges from the previous one as motifs migrate across successive works. In this sense, Prokopaviciute's practice resonates with the idea that space and form within the painting, is not conceived as a pre-existing field to be represented or occupied, but as something that emerges through the reciprocal acts of painting and perception. Space is continuously constituted in the encounter between gestures, forms, memories of previous paintings, and the embodied experience of looking. The resulting self-referential visual syntax resists the notion of the painting as a fixed, autonomous object.
Prokopaviciute's work explores the idea that meaning is always in flux, with a form of abstraction that resists fixed formal vocabularies and embraces painting as a dynamic process. Her practice positions abstraction not as a withdrawal from the visible world but as a critical mode of investigation through which relationships between form, perception, and materiality can be continuously renegotiated. The resulting paintings invite viewers into an active perceptual encounter in which meaning emerges through movement, duration, and sustained observation rather than immediate visual legibility.
