We are pleased to be participating in Liste Art Fair Basel for the second time, this year with a solo presentation by Alexander Basil, featuring his distinctive pictorial language exploring aspects of perceived identity and self-creation through figures and anthropomorphized objects that create a coded depiction of the self.
In his current practice there is an exploration of the bureaucratic medical, psychological assessments and administrative procedural elements specific to undergoing gender-affirming healthcare. Recent works have included images of Basil within his doctor’s consultation room where diagrams and models of phalluses populate the composition. Other elements such as the rendering of a letter from the German government confirming his insurance coverage, diagrams of phalluses appearing on laptops and images of Laurence Michael Dillon (1915-1962), who in the 1940s became the first trans man to undergo phalloplasty, create a dense overview of the layers complex and oftentimes degrading factors of social, psychological and administrative barriers facing those seeking gender affirming healthcare.
